Building Schools, School Buildings: Post-war Modernist Architecture in Ghana

About The Lecture

This lecture is about the post-world war 2 secondary school building program in Ghana.  It comes out of my broader research project which explores nation-building, citizenship and modernity in Ghana through a study of the architecture of schools. Drawing on extensive archival and field research, I analyse secondary schools in particular as (material and figurative) sites of nation-building and the making of citizens, and trace the production, reproduction, and perpetuation of sociopolitical hierarchies through schools from colonial to post-colonial Gold Coast/Ghana.
