Architecture in the Arts and Popular Culture

What can we learn from the ways in which architecture is utilized and/or portrayed in literature, popular culture, media ,and the visual and performing arts? This course explores architecture in, through, and from forms such as games, novels, film, plays, and art. Artistic portrayals of architecture not only reveal contemporaneous perspectives on architecture, but also allow us to examine real and imagined past, future, and alternative worldviews. Through a series of case studies, readings, and viewings, course participants will critically examine and analyze the use(and unuse and disuse) of architecture as plots, backdrops, hosts, side characters, muses, protagonists, and more towards better understanding and development of creative approaches.
